Home-cooked diets occupy a strange middle ground in veterinary nutrition. Done well, under expert guidance, they can meaningfully improve a dog's health. Done casually, based on a recipe found online, they are one of the more common ways owners unintentionally cause nutritional harm. The evidence on both sides is worth understanding before you start cooking.
The central problem with most home-cooked diets isn't the concept, it's the execution. An evaluation of home-prepared maintenance diet recipes found that the overwhelming majority failed to meet established nutrient requirements for adult dogs, regardless of whether the recipe was written by a veterinarian or a non-veterinarian (Stockman et al., 2013). More recent research analyzing home-prepared diets reported through the Dog Aging Project found that these diets vary enormously in ingredients and composition, and that few of them are likely to be nutritionally complete as written (O'Brien et al., 2025). A detailed review of over 100 submitted homemade diet recipes found that none met all vitamin and mineral requirements for dogs or cats (Morris, 2021).
That same review of submitted homemade recipes identified specific, recurring problems that tend to show up when a diet isn't formulated by a nutrition specialist:
- Calcium sourced improperly, sometimes from bones that pose choking or blockage risks
- Copper, zinc, and iron consistently out of balance with one another
- Iodine over- or under-supplementation due to inconsistent kelp quality
- Vitamin E and vitamin D frequently under-supplemented
(Morris, 2021). Individually, these gaps might not cause immediate symptoms. Compounded over months or years, they can contribute to real, measurable health problems.
This isn't just a theoretical concern. Data from the Dog Aging Project examining diet type and owner-reported health conditions found that, controlling for sex, age, and body size, dogs fed a home-cooked diet had significantly higher odds of gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease, and liver disease compared to dogs fed a standard extruded diet (Ortiz et al., 2025). This kind of population-level association doesn't prove that home cooking directly causes disease in every case, but it does align with what nutritional analyses of these diets have already shown: many are simply not balanced.
The story changes considerably when a home-cooked diet is properly formulated. A descriptive analysis of dogs on veterinary-guided homemade diets found that the majority of owners who stuck with the plan saw real improvements, including better coat condition and, in dogs with pre-existing conditions, high rates of symptom improvement, with 95% of dogs with chronic enteropathy improving and 83% of dogs with dermatologic disease improving (Pignataro et al., 2024). Dietary therapy is increasingly recognized as a legitimate treatment option for dogs with chronic enteropathies specifically, often used alongside or instead of medication (Jugan, 2020), and a retrospective study of dogs with food-responsive enteropathy found diet to be a central, effective part of management for many affected dogs (Candellone et al., 2024). Even in diabetic dogs, a randomized crossover study found that a properly formulated homemade diet could produce more favorable glycemic control than a commercial diet in some cases (Tardo et al., 2026).
Even with a good recipe in hand, sticking to it precisely matters more than most owners realize. A study surveying owners using homemade diets found that a meaningful percentage admitted to modifying recipes, under-measuring key ingredients like oil and salt, or inconsistently using recommended supplements, all of which make the diet's nutritional composition unpredictable (Oliveira et al., 2014). This is a reminder that a nutritionally sound recipe on paper only works if it's followed consistently and accurately.
Home-cooked diets are also, on average, more expensive than most commercial alternatives. A cost analysis comparing home-cooked and commercially prepared diets for dogs with chronic enteropathies found that complete and balanced home-cooked diets cost more than dry commercial diets, though not necessarily more than canned commercial options (Kratzer et al., 2022). A separate cost comparison found home-cooked diets were consistently more expensive than dry maintenance and dry therapeutic commercial diets across multiple scenarios (Vendramini et al., 2020). This is worth factoring in alongside the health considerations, especially for diets intended to be fed long-term.
Board-certified veterinary nutritionists are in short supply and often hard to come by. While certain specialty centers or university veterinary hospitals will have board-certified nutritionists available, one of the more practical ways to obtain nutritionist insight is by having them do a consult facilitated through your primary care veterinarian.
